DISASTER MITIGATION

Disaster mitigation is any action or measure that either prevents the occurrence of a disaster or reduces the severity of its effects. Though in many cases it is impossible to compensate the damage caused by the disasters, it is possible to

· Minimize the potential risks by developing early warning strategies.
· Implementation of developmental plans.
· Mobilization of basic amenities.

The application of space remote sensing comes in handy with disaster management.

The steps involved in planting to recover from a disaster is in the first case to analyse the type and form of disaster.

Type I-Disaster

Least serious category which can consists of fewer death tolls, damage to property or events due to blackouts, fire breakouts, strikes etc. these can be solved through putting up a backup system and can be sorted out with few volunteers itself.

Type II

A more serious one pertaining a large number of personnel things and habitat destruction and loss of life. Needs proper planning and investment and proper knowledge in implementing the forces for post disaster period.

Type III

It is a wide spread one involving more than a locality. The best example is Bhopal tragedy. In this the help of the international community can be resorted out in one way or the other for a large inflow of aids. Even disease such as AIDS, radiation related disorders can be cited under this.

Hence for better management there are some of the constraints that can be followed.

· Selection of a team and train them so that they can with hold all types of barriers when a situation demands.
· Access to basics resources and funds where there is a need.
· They have to keep them updating their surrounding and take necessary steps then and there by minimizing the disaster.
· Preventing man made disasters by creating awareness among the public for example discarding of waste, saving energy, planting of sapling, removing thatched roof from schools to avert any fire mishaps and so on. We can say that our future lies in our own hands.
